It had been fifteen years seen the hero beat up his father so badly the old man died from his wounds. Fifteen years since we watched a group of terrorists enlist the help of the Care Bears to slaughter thousands of unwitting civil servants and proceed to overthrow the closest thing to a strong and stable government the galaxy had seen in millenia.
Fifteen years since Return of the Jedi... although we didn't know we'd been waiting for it all that time. We didn't know we needed it because we'd seen the end already. We had closure.
But then came the news.... new Star Wars prequels. That's like getting new books in the Bible, or something. So, this was important. I seem to recall the trailer was first shown on the Big Breakfast in the UK (Johnny & Denise-era, I think). We videotaped it.
And you know what, it's still a good trailer. Even though the CG looks dated, it delivers just enough atmosphere, enough hints of the plot. It's got the Williams score, and Jedi and lighstabers but lots of new and shiny too.
That was twenty years ago this week. We were blown away. We spent the next six months positively vibrating with excitement. We didn't know this was the beginning of the countdown to when we would be forced to put aside childish things*.
Cut to May 1999:
"Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute. "
Taxation of what now?
* apart from all the fucking Star Wars LEGO I seem to own, something that's only got worse since the kid arrived.
